The
role of Gays in organized religion is the focus of “Not That Kind Of
Christian!,” the latest offering by Films For Thought, screening on
Saturday, February 23rd at Saint Gregory’s Episcopal
Church in Parsippany. Films For Thought is the ongoing series of
current cinema sponsored by Saint Gregory’s. “Not That Kind Of
Christian!” is a feature-length documentary that explores gay and
lesbian Christians' struggle for acceptance in the Episcopal Church. By
chronicling the activism of Dr. Louie Crew, an outspoken champion of
inclusiveness from the Episcopal Diocese Of Newark, the film is able to
explore the 'schism ' that the gay rights movement threatens to bring
to worldwide Anglicanism (particularly in Africa), and the ways in
which activists such as Dr. Crew can profoundly shape our personal
liberties at the highest institutional levels.
Saint Gregory’s Vicar, Rev. Susan
Sica, said “We are delighted to offer the NJ premiere of this inspiring
film. Inclusiveness is the heart of what we do here at Saint Gregory’s
and this film is a perfect companion piece for those efforts.” Dr.
Crew, who is a professor emeritus at Rutgers, will be on hand to lead a
lively discussion at the film’s conclusion. The film also features
exclusive interviews with Bishop Gene Robinson, Bishop John S. Spong,
and Ernest Clay (Crew's spouse), as well as appearances by conservative
journalists Douglas LeBlanc and David Virtue.
The film is unrated, but is not recommended for children under 13.
A moderated discussion will follow.
